Accountable Information Infrastructure

 

This work area will investigate the models and techniques for combining multiple forms of meta-information that makes information accountable, including provenance, trust and reputation and exploit it to present uniform views over information originating from multiple sources in HACs.

Driven by the applications, the investigation will be both conceptual and practical: it will research models and algorithms, but also decentralised architecture to offer effective accountability services to applications. Such services will be made available online to inform actors during their decision-making activities and offline to audit actors to ensure accountability.

Progress against Objectives

  • Design and implementation of an API for registering interest in some provenance events and for sending notifications when such events occur. This was successfully integrated into AtomicORCHID.
  • The development of a generic methodology for analysing provenance information based on provenance network metrics. The method was successfully demonstrated in Provstore and AtommicORCHID applications.
  • Development of a graph analysis technique based on aggregating provenance types that is capable of generating provenance graph summaries to facilitate the understanding of complex provenance information.
  • The design and deployment of an alternative reality game ‘The Apocalypse of MoP’ in collaboration with Urban Angel, an artistic production company, to explore usability and comprehension of provenance information.

Key Aims for 2015

  • To carry out quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data of user interactions with provenance in The Apocalypse of MoP to understand common graph layout patterns and how they relate to user understanding of provenance.
  • To continue work on identifying common provenance patterns. The focus of this work will be on developing pattern extraction techniques tailored for provenance graphs with the emphasis on scalability.
  • To investigate the application of matrix decomposition techniques over the corpus of provenance graphs from ORCHID applications.
